The hardest step in becoming leaner as a organization, to become more efficient is usually the first one. Getting started is much more difficult than just staying with the same old plan, the status quo. It is far more hard to admit that there is a problem, that you know it and you are willing to do what is necessary to fix the problem. Sometimes the issue just isn't apparent and it takes really looking at it to just discover it.

And then, once you do discover it, it can be incredibly challenging to get others to see it and agree that there really is a problem and that there is a need to fix it. People don’t like to change, nobody does because it's simpler to remain the same and not do the work necessary to change. When the project it decided, when you know what you are going to go after, then you have to put together a team to look closer at the trouble. Sometimes the problem found is just a symptom of another bigger, more embedded issue. It is the team’s job to detect the cause of the problem and then start devising a plan to fix it.

In whatever processes that you might be making an attempt to streamline, it's usually a safe bet that it can be broken down even further into smaller steps, into smaller processes. Sometimes it's the only way to move forward because the job is just too massive to overhaul in one fail swoop. Again, it is for the team to decide what is worth going after first.

You want to detect what will make the greatest initial impact and what will help the most people. That’s right; you need to consider how it's going to affect everybody up and down the process stream. If changing something to help shipping out can save the company money and time, but puts a strain on receiving and makes their jobs much more complicated, then you have to ask if it is necessary to make the change.

That's why putting your team together is such an important part of the overall process. If the team is only comprised of members of the shipping department, then they really do not care how it will affect the receiving department and by the time somebody notices that it does, it might be too late and the changes already had been implemented.

It is a smart choice to have your employees take a six sigma certification course. This six sigma training will help them become even greater assets to you company, and will make your business run more efficiently.
