Australia Day is one of the biggest events that occurs in Sydney each year. It is a celebration of the Anniversary date of the discovery of Sydney and is something that is celebrated throughout the region with festivals and events of epic proportions. It is a true time of rejoicing in everything Australian and that is why there is much controversy about the keynote speaker that has been chosen this year to give the Australia Day speech.

Any Australian would consider it an honor to be chosen to give this speech. The tradition has always bestowed this honor on an Australian born citizen. This year however, the choice to deliver the speech by the council's vote has sparked some fierce controversy because the honor would be going to a non- Australian; in fact, going to a British born talk show host named Michael Parkinson.

The controversy stems from the opinions that Australians are conflicted by some outsider delivering the speech, thus opening the door for any outsider to take the podium on this great day for all Australians to celebrate. Although Michael Parkinson is a great choice, he is also a well known popular world renowned talk show host, but he only resides part time in the region and is non-Australian. If this choice is allowed to proceed, the door will swing open wide for anyone famous personality to enjoy the honor that used to be uniquely Australian and will make the traditions a thing of the past.

It is a common consensus that the Australian culture and this high honor should never be mired by keynote speakers not from the region. Previous keynote speakers have included important Australian figures such as Dr. Tim Flannery, the environmentalist and musician of world fame as well as noted politician Peter Garrett. Unless the decision is overturned, the public controversy on this subject could continue.

Everything wonderful about Sydney Australia is what Australia Day is all about. This will go on unobstructed regardless of the controversy. As fiery as the controversy might be about Michael Parkinson's speech, most of those in attendance will listen to what he will be saying about Australia. Australia is his current home and the festivals in Australia will continue through January concerning the Aussie anniversary celebration.
