Everyone knows about the drug problems that face Americans today, but they might not be thinking about the same kinds of drugs as the health care industry. There is a severe lack of legal drugs and are affecting the way patients are treated by doctors at almost every level. Just because a person is insured and has a good policy doesn't mean he or she is receiving the best possible drugs because many doctors are now being forced to offer drugs of a lesser quality because of the lack of quality drugs and the extreme expenses that go into producing and purchasing them. These are drugs that can be helpful at almost every level of treatment, but second tier drugs are becoming much more abundant in the health care world.
At the present time over 100 of the most commonly prescribed life saving medications are in short supply and while the drug industry is overseen by the FDA these drugs are produced by independent companies and those companies are slowing or stopping production on many of the different drugs that are commonly prescribed by those in the medical profession. The slowing or stopping of product on many of these common medications may be due to the fact that the company does not feel that these medications are profitable enough for them to continue producing while some issues may be due to problems within specific processing plants themselves.
Many of the drugs that are in short supply these days are those that are used for cancer treatment, including chemotherapy drugs, as well as some of the drugs that are used for life saving on crash carts throughout the United States. Overall, this is a crisis that Americans need to be aware of because this shortage is something that can affect the type of treatments that are available to you and your hospital ER staff when you become ill.
Doctors are having to resort to prescribing different drugs in place of those that they would normally prescribe very simply because these drugs are not available and as a result many of the drugs they are prescribing may not be covered by your health insurance. This is essentially leaving patients to pay for these very expensive medications out of their own pockets.
The system clearly isn't working, but that doesn't affect the drug manufacturers because all they can do is watch their bottom line and try not to go broke. The government must take action to make sure everyone is treated with the best possible drugs and that no one suffers.
