Do you ever wonder how America got into the mess that is the current state of health insurance? It requires a history lesson, so settle in. It hasn't always been such a quagmire that fills hours worth of radio and television debate and has even cost and won the presidency for several candidates. It is a polarizing debate that has gone on for so long that many people have forgotten that it hasn't always been such a divisive issue.
There were no health insurance benefits for employees up until World War II. Then the U.S. government didn't want to penalize their soldiers so in an attempt to keep a level playing ground while the country was at war the government banned companies from giving pay raises to civilians until the war was over. As a result, employers were looking for a way to reward employees without giving them money and they decided that they could pay for their health insurance coverage and that would be a nice way to reward them without breaking the pay freeze.
Health insurance at its inception meant that the employer paid the entire cost, but since the rise in health care has multiplied, those who are insured are being forced to take on some of the expense. Now that pay has been cut or leveled out in many jobs and the economy is suffering so that business are not making enough money to support their employees, it has become a much larger financial burden on the individual employees.
Things have gotten so bad on the health insurance front that each year fewer employers offer this benefit to employees at all resulting in even more financial hardship. What once seemed to be a great gift has gradually become a curse and over time this benefit of employment has grown to mean less and cost more.
Perhaps if this had not occurred during the war the health care system in the United States would be on better footing right now. The truth is if there had not been so many people who were receiving health care coverage as a benefit of employment perhaps the government would have had to repair this system and make changes to it sooner. Sometimes what seems like a blessing can actually become a curse and honestly the free heath care that many were able to take advantage of in the past has become a true curse in today's society. Unfortunately, there is no free lunch or free insurance anymore.
