The various levels of employee training and responsibility are represented by belt designations, just like a martial arts student. Green Belts are employees who have basic training and a familiarity with the philosophy and methodology of Six Sigma. This level generally applies to production workers and others with limited areas of influence.

Black belts are employees who devote their entire work existence to ensuring that six sigma methodology is applied to the projects they are involved with. Master black belts collect and sort data gathered by black belts, along with coaching black belts in the best ways of applying six sigma tenets to the projects they deal with. Champions collect the information sorted by master black belts and use it to be positive that the methodology applied is functioning seamlessly through various departments.
