Art is important in Brisbane. This is absolutely obvious when you look at what is going on at the Gallery of Modern Art there. Although they already have an impressive collection of works in residence, they are regularly acquiring new pieces. This is just one reason why the museum is something that they can be proud of here. It offers many people a glimpse into important works and genres that they would probably not have the chance to see, much less understand. Those who live in and visit Brisbane will have the chance to see and enjoy these recent acquisitions.

One of the latest acquisitions of art at the Gallery is a collaboration project from a group called YNG. It refers to collaboration between Toshomito Nara and Graf, a Japanese creative design group. Since 2003, the team has been creating unusual products that is now on display. The pieces are worth seeing because they use products that aren't normal by today's modern art standards. The elements of design that they bring together makes you feel as if you know Nara personally and his conception that it's all about what a person does and how he thinks about it.

This group built what basically amounts to a tiny cabin resting on top of a little camping van. The entire thing was put together from reclaimed timbers. It actually looks like a small artists loft that could be fantastically driven from inspirational place to place. The inside of this is just chock full of so many oddball things that you will want to circle around it and peer through every possible window that you can. There are Nara's paintings, drawings, an most interesting, many small found objects that caught his eye.

For something on a completely different plane of existence there is a new work by Spencer Finch. The focus of his art is all about human perception. Mainly he is curious about how we see and interpret light and color. He also takes into consideration they way that people remember the things that they see as well as where and when they see these things. His method of showing us this can be simply described as beautifully colorful.

The new work in residence is all about a cave. Specifically the cave in France that was discovered in 1940 and has some of the most incredible prehistoric cave paintings in existence. He wanted to capture the exact moment as a person that has been looking at these paintings is then walking out of the cave into the welcoming light of the sun. This is what you need to have in mind when you stand and gaze at these fluorescent light fixtures, lamps, and colored filters.
