You might think that it sounds funny to have an accident but incontinence is only funny when it happens to someone else. A lot of people when they get older will have trouble with urine leakage. It can be from sneezing or even laughing. Because it causes embarrassment many people don't even want to discuss the issue with their doctor. Because people don't talk about it, it is much more common than most realize. It happens to both men and women, usually but not always after age 50.

Urinary incontinence can stem from a great many illnesses and issues. Some of the more serious are diabetes and prostrate issues. Childbirth is one thing that can make it happen at any age. People with multiple sclerosis and vascular disease will often suffer from it as well. These are just a few things that can be a cause, there are so many more. This is something that if you have noticed it happening then you should go and talk to your doctor about it.

One form of incontinence that affects many women is called stress incontinence. This happens when you laugh, exercise, sneeze, or do anything that stresses the bladder. Generally the culprit is weak pelvic muscles and this is not something that you need to rush to the doctors about. Some people that have a hard time getting around because of arthritis or something else that slows them down will sometimes have to deal with urge incontinence . People that suddenly need to go and can't get to the bathroom fast enough have this.

Overflow incontinence is something that occurs then small amounts of urine leak out unexpectedly. This is caused by an overfilled bladder and can occur when something is blocking the urinary flow or with conditions such as an enlarged prostate gland or tumor. Another type of incontinence is functional incontinence and this has less to do with the bladder and more to do with another condition that is causing the inability to make it to the bathroom in time. Many times this other condition, like arthritis, doesn't allow people to move quickly or freely enough and hence an accident occurs.

Because it is usually something that happens when people become older, it is common to think that incontinence is a normal part of aging. This is not true and if it happen to you go to see your doctor and get some clues as to why this is happening. It is common and there is not likely anything that you can say that will shock your doctor.
