Preparation is key when it comes to building any sort of drastic alternation in the process or mechanics of your manufacturing. You can not simply state that you want to modify something since it isn’t operating as well as you would like and start moving things around. What happens if what you're changing it to doesn’t work? What if what you change it too makes it even worse and brings even more issues to the process?
The point is that you must plan in advance. You need to created a plan and map out your entire process from beginning to end to be able to anticipate any issues or delays.
When you tear apart a process and begin trying to remodel it without having everything prepared upfront, then there is the possibility that you will not get it back together in a fashion that works and if you try and put it back together the way it was, you've thrown away so much time and a lot of resources that it wasn’t worth doing anything.
By building a plan and mapping out what you're going to do, there is a chance to see what is going to work and what you might have questions about. It is also an ideal time for questions to be proposed by the members of the team.
That’s right, you should have constructed a team around you to help in the process. They will see things that you do not and they're going to have different perspectives that can help shed light on the process that you may never have thought of. These people shouldn’t just be yes men that you surround yourself with and they shouldn’t be managers from the same department.
They should be workers from a variety of areas of the company with different interests in how the process works and what you are trying to attain, but with the same aim in mind. They should be from various levels of management and from various levels of time within the business. You want diverse opinions and various life encounters.
You also want people who are prepared to return and express why the change is vital to their particular department. You need a leader and someone that has some experiences in changing processes within a moving company. You also need people that are particular and very detailed in what they do to record what is going to come about.
