Sugar seems to be the new topic of the day and the debate is; does it really matters where this sweet source comes from, especially the sugar that we ingest? Many experts say not really because the body digests all our sugar intake with the same process, however problems start to occur when much of the sugar puts a strain on our system as a whole, raising more questions.
The hard facts are that sugar is sugar and the body must use insulin to break down the sugar. Many of the experts agree that fructose is a more natural sugar and fruit in general is good for the body, however most every other sugars we swallow is highly processed and would fit easily into the same category as cane or corn sugar or syrup.
The increase of sugar in the American diet is one of the reasons why the instances of diabetes and hypoglycemia have increased so greatly. While we all know that there is sugar in the ice cream and chocolate cake we eat most people are unaware of how much sugar is actually contained in many of the food that we wouldn't even think of and what this is doing to our bodies.
One example of this is that most people realize that jelly has sugar in it and this is not a surprise, however most peanut butters also have high amounts of sugar added to them and believe it or not even most breads contain sugar as well. So when you hand your children a peanut butter sandwich really in essence you are providing them with enough sugar to last them an entire week. It is in these food items such as crackers, breads, and other non sweet food items that we don't notice the sugar.
Not knowing, reading or understanding the maze of food labels and what they really mean will not allow you to make better food choices for yourself or your family. Ingredients such as fructose, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, dextrose, maltose, glucose, galactose will be misleading and potentially dangerous unless you train yourself to be in the know. Be very suspicious of words that end in "ose". There is no better time to change your knowledge than beginning today. Knowing how much sugar is in the foods you buy will add up to future healthy years to enjoy because you will be cutting back on your sugar intake and seeing overall improvement in your total health. Start the new journey by reducing your sugar consumption.
