There are few time wasters greater in cost and effort than mistakes. Mistakes waste more than time; they waste material, effort and money. The material, depending on what is used in the part can range from just a few cents worth of aluminum to large amounts of a precious metal that will have to be reused in some other capacity or melted down and started all over again.

Even if the material can be applied once again, the amount of time and energy needed to make it reusable is just rolled back into the cost of the product. Every time there's a mistake, the price to produce the part rises. From time to time the part that was created wrong can't be reused plus the entire component has to be created out of new material. This type of waste is extremely expensive.

So you not only waste the material, but the time needed to make the part initially and any time lost to stop the process and call back the incorrect parts. How much time was wasted working with the wrong parts? Did any of the bad parts make it to the end user? How will your customers react knowing that the bad parts made it into their hands and into their products? How will you rebuild that trust and relationship? After the losses in material, the loss of time is even more substantial and even harder to make up.

Everybody knows that labor is the most expensive part of any process and when you lose time and pay for labor that doesn't amount to any value in production; it is an even bigger loss. It is very difficult to make up for a mistake like this and it is bad enough if one part makes it through that is bad, but that is where it needs to stop. No company can afford an entire run of bad parts, which is why it is important to have some sort of safety net in place with a good quality control program.

Errors are going to happen, it's a part of life and component of a performing enterprise, but limiting the mistakes and keeping their ramifications to a minimum will be the most critical thing to do. If there is a mistake on the line, in production, it needs to be limited to only one mistake after which it requires to be fixed. If there is certainly more than one mistake, then you might have a a lot more of a severe problem.
