Have you ever considered what you would do if the lifesaving medication you needed was in short supply? Drugs that doctors feel are necessary to assist in the treatment and recovery of an illness may not be there when a patient requires them.
It is a bit frightening to think of but ultimately it is something that is currently occurring in the United States. Drugs, although they come through the health care system itself, are produced by private companies that are in the production of medications simply to make money. Any drug that is deemed not to be profitable to these companies has the chance of being eliminated from production.
Some drugs are sent to be in short supply. This situation is currently being observed and those drugs in question are essential to treating fatal illnesses. Critical drugs such as chemotherapy drugs and those that can be found on a medical crash cart are a few that aren't available. The government is unaware of this dilemma.
And now the problem of drug shortages is even extending to the prisons in the United States as the drugs that are used in Death Penalty situations are also becoming in short supply. Now that this problem is affecting government agencies perhaps someone will step in and do something about these shortages. While doctors can prescribe alternative drugs to those that are in short supply, many of these drugs are not as effective or contain more side effects. And there are other concerns as well as insurance companies many times will not pay for the alternative drugs prescribed by your doctor in place of the more common ones.
How can we convince pharmaceutical companies to continue to meet the demand of certain drugs they deem unprofitable. Perhaps offering monetary incentives are the key as they add to the bottom line of making that drug. Open dialogue is essential between the pharmaceutical companies and the government when it appears the drug company will phase out or cut production in certain drugs. This will allow time for the government to prepare, inform those involved and seek alternatives before it really becomes an issue. Being prepared may make the difference in saving a life.
