While most anyone would agree that drug, cigarette and alcohol addiction has always been a problem in the United States, in comparison, there is very little focus on obesity and food addiction which is currently rated the number 1 addiction. The runaway obesity problems hasn't gained the popularity status like the rest of the bandwagon addictions have.
As healthy and life sustaining as food is, it can also create a dilemma for those addicted to food. The daily routine of eating is sometimes the excuse to over eat or consume unhealthy foods considered to be comfort foods are very delicious but can have deadly ending. This spiral can spin out of control.
An addict must face their addiction every day and often times food can be hard to deal with because it is freely and openly displayed and sold, making it harder for an addict to make healthy food choices that does affect their weight. Food addictions can lead to other destructive and deadly behaviors such as bulimia and anorexia in addition to the thousands of obese persons. While some addictions are very evident, the others are cleverly disguised and often involve weight extremes.
Addiction to food is very serious with some serious side effects. These could include but not limited to hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, including heart disease, heart attack, stroke and/or possibly death. Over eating and obesity are serious individual problems and are as serious if not more serious than drugs and alcohol. This could be because, in our culture, to break bread with someone is considered normal and part of the social fabric. A date or night out on the town will often begin or end with a meal with that special someone, family or friends.
Many people might regard a food addiction as something of a joke or just plain silly, but it is very serious and very real as well as create some very real lingering health problems and issues. The characteristics of an addiction denotes the inability to walk away from the struggle without or until a submission has happened and food it has been said, is a powerful draw and part of our primal instinct to survive. To break the chains of any addiction means changing habits that have been learned. Changing these habits will allow for other good changes such as full lifestyle changes and weight loss, but sadly some people will have to battle these addictions the rest of their lives.
