Uninsured Americans are growing in numbers and many are asking how this will effect health insurance overall. The term uninsured tends to have a negative connotation and many assume these individuals aren't employed and are living off of government handouts. They would be surprised to learn that 80% of those who aren't covered by health insurance are indeed employed or are a dependent of a working individual.
The number of Americans that are without health insurance is about 44 million. That's significant. To that number add another 38 million who have coverage but aren't adequately covered by the plans they have. These individuals worry about what will happen to them should a major illness fall upon them. Without coverage, there are no preventive care measures being taken. No shots to prevent the flu, no immunizations for their children to prevent them from getting dreadful diseases. Without these preventive measures, these individuals are more prone to getting illnesses that can translate into major medical costs.
These uninsured individuals are putting a major clog into the workings of our current medical system. When they can't afford to pay their bills for treatment received for their medical conditions a vicious cycle begins. The doctor or hospital can't collect payment for their services so the only way they can pay their expenses are to raise the fees of their services to those who have medical coverage. In order for the insurance companies to pay the doctors and the hospitals they have to raise insurance premiums.
The health care system needs a lot of revamping and while many would say that the crisis of the number of uninsured in this country is a difficult one they are unwilling to see how this has any bearing on them. No matter how we are paying for the uninsured we are and pretending as if this doesn't have anything to do with us is very simply wrong.
The current health care reform may upfront seem to be costing everyone a bit more but in the long run if we can get everyone covered under some sort of health insurance plan this will be best for everyone across the board. It will be much less expensive to have these uninsured individuals covered under insurance and receive regular health care then it will be to leave things the way they are. And even if we could leave everything status quo, ultimately the experts say that in the end this will cause the government and the health care system to go bankrupt and then where will we be?
