There are different levels of sleep trouble that people deal with. Sometimes having a little trouble sleeping is not that big of a deal. If the lack of sleep is starting to affect the way that you live then it is definitely time to try a few things to get more sleep. Some are pretty basic and simple. A sleep schedule is one way to stay regulated and to be able to fall asleep at the same time each night. For many it is also helpful to stop eating late at night. If these ideas don't help then it is time to try more things.
AFTERNOON BEVERAGES - Once you have cut out things like caffeine from your evening routine you may want to look at your afternoon habits as well. For some individuals even having one caffeinated cup of tea in the late afternoon could be keeping them from getting the rest they need each evening. Switching to decaf for even your afternoon beverages can have a significant impact on your sleep habits.
Nibbling on sleep inducing foods can be very helpful to an easier time sleeping. That does not mean eating a big meal before going to bed though. Getting filled up can have the opposite affect and keep you awake instead. Try eating small amounts of chicken or turkey to get the benefits of tryptophan. It can also be helpful to eat some whole wheat pasta with tomato nice or milk with cereal.
Although you might think that having a drink will help you to become sleepy it can be the actual opposite. A late night alcoholic drink will work better for you if you have it with dinner. Having it earlier in the evening will give it time to make it's way through your system. It has been shown that alcohol will get in the way of a decent nights sleep. It also makes it more likely that you will wake up more easily and frequently during the night.
SOAK EARLY - Many people believe that soaking in the hot bath before bed will help to relax them and make them more prepared for sleep. In fact, however, since a hot bath raises a person's body temperature this may actually make it more difficult to get to sleep. So if you like taking a long soak in the tub you may wish to make it part of your morning or afternoon routine and leave the evenings for sleep. While there are many things that you should not do if you want to get a good night's sleep, yoga is not one of them. Many find that doing a few yoga poses and stretches, especially those designed to help induce sleep, is a fine way to get to sleep faster and get a more restful night's rest.
