With health care insurance premiums rising, employers are faced with the dilemma of choosing which plans they want to offer their employees. Many are putting more of the burden on the employees than they have in the past. The types of plans most companies seem to be offering are HMO's and PPO's. Very few offer true indemnity plans which have traditionally offered the most benefit rich plans, however, these plans are extremely expensive and few employees can afford them.
It is important for employers to make sure their employees understand these plans and how best to use them. They differ from indemnity plans because these plans offer the best options when their members use the service providers within their plan. It is important for the members to check each of their doctors to make sure they are within their plan. If not, they make be paying higher costs than if they were using a service provider.
It's important to stress to the employees if they are unsure as to what or whom is covered within their chosen plans, they need to either call the doctor or better yet call customer service of the insurance company and ask them. No one likes to be surprised when they think they have coverage only to find out they didn't use the recommended doctors.
One way in which the PPO differs from the HMO is that in the PPO as long as you choose a doctor within the plan you will be fine, even if it's a specialist. In the HMO, you chose a primary care physician and you need to see them each time you have a medical issue and then they will be the one to refer you to another doctor or a specialist if further care is needed.
The next your company has medical insurance enrollment, take the time to do your homework and compare each plan offered. Choosing the plan that will meet your needs as well as your budget can take some effort in getting the information and making comparisons but just may save you significant dollars during the year when medical issues arise and care needs to be given.
