Did you know that the health care system can run out of lifesaving medications? That the drugs you need or those that your doctor deems necessary for your treatment and recovery may not be available when you need them?

While this is a scary thought especially if you are the one that needs the drug, but it is occurring right here in the United States. Drugs are administered via the health care system but they are produced and manufactured by individual corporations. Drugs are a big business and they represent billions of dollars. If a corporation's balance sheet shows that a certain drug is no longer profitable to the bottom line it's their decision on whether or not to continue to manufacture the drug.

This is a problem in the current system that is finally coming into the public eye and the medications that are in short supply are those that are pertinent to saving lives. Drugs that are used for chemotherapy and those that are used on medical crash carts to save those in critical situations are just a few of the drugs that aren't available and believe it or not the government has no control or awareness of these drugs becoming extinct.

The shortage of drugs can also be experience in the United States penal system. Drugs used on those that have been administered when convicts are given the death penalty. Perhaps now that this shortage is reaching to governmental areas, this will bring awareness to the government and cause them to react. If there is a shortage of a drug, a doctor can prescribe an alternative medication, however, it may be one that isn't covered by insurance which can be expensive or worst have bad side effects when taken.

There needs to be solutions to this dilemma we are facing. Unfortunately, major pharmaceutical companies are not in the moral business so we have to get them where it counts - their pocketbooks. Maybe the government can offer monetary incentives or tax breaks if they continue making a drug they deem not profitable but is needed in the medical community to save lives. There also needs to be more open communication from the drug companies to give advance notice to the medical community that this drug will no longer be available so they can prepare to offer alternatives to their patients.
